Contractor Exam Tip #4

Use Practice Exams to Get Your Timing Right

One of the most common reasons that contractor candidates fail the exams is that they run out of time. A common statement I hear is “I was finding all the answers to the questions and felt like I was doing fine. Then I looked up and I had 5 minutes left and 25 questions left to answer.”

That means a little better time management would have made the difference.

All of my practice exams are designed to simulate the state exams but to be completed in 1 hour. For example, the Business and Finance exam is 125 questions and 6.5 hours long. 6.5 hours is 390 minutes. 390 minutes divided by 125 questions = 3.12 minutes per question. That equates to answering about 20 questions per hour. Therefore, all of my Business and Finance Practice Exams are 20 questions designed to be completed in 1 hour. Taking these practice exams with the 1 hour time limit in mind, helps the candidate match the pace required to finish the exam on time.

I chose the 1-hour time frame as it is a standard period of time we are all familiar with. If your schedule is like many candidates, there is a limited number of 6 1/2 hour time slots in your schedule in which to fit in a complete practice exam. However, 1 hour time slots will be easier to manage.

Watch the clock. All of the exams (except the plumbing trade exam) are taken at a Pearson Vue testing center. The security is generally very tight. You will not be allowed to wear a watch into the exam. However, there is a clock icon at the top right on the screen. Be sure to click on the icon. It will countdown the time remaining. Try to keep yourself on a 20 question per hour pace by glancing at the clock intermittently.

Don’t spend too much time on questions on which the answers are very hard to find. An alarm clock should go off in your head after 4 minutes or so. Don’t be afraid to mark the question and come back to it. There is a check mark icon at the top of the screen. If you “check mark” the question, the computer will keep a list of the questions you have checked. However, if you check mark a question, be sure to answer something before you move to the next question because if you run out of time and don’t get to review the question, you don’t even get the benefit of a guess. An unanswered question will be graded as incorrect. Even a guess gives you a 25% chance.

Some schools teach a “gridding” system. This means that the student reviews every question at the beginning of the exam, trying to determine in which manual the answer is located. Then, the student will answer all of the questions in one manual, then move on to the next manual. In my opinion, the time spent on going through every question before answering any questions eats up too much time for the benefit. I suggest answering one question at a time.
